I believe my top 5 strengths are: continuous improvement, problem solving, systems thinking, research, and altruism. These strengths are more than just skills, but could really be defined as my mindset since they dictate so much of how I think. I am most fulfilled in life when I am learning and positively impacting peoples’ lives through problem solving.

I’m a born problem solver and innovator. I can’t go through the day without solving a problem. Since the age of a young child, my Grandma would tell me I should be an inventor when I grow up since I was always thinking of ways to solve problems.

I’m a “jack of all trades”, although I do tailor my LinkedIn to my career in IT. I may not be a subject matter expert, but my knowledge extends beyond IT into subjects like business, teaching, finance, life coaching, and much, much more.

A team is a group with a shared goal, but plenty of groups share a goal and still fail to function as a team. What makes the difference, in my experience, is communication. Not just the frequency of it, but the quality. And quality isn't only affected by clarity and format, which are important factors, but also it's team members feeling safe enough to collaborate openly or to ask for help without it feeling like an admission of failure. When communication breaks down, everything else suffers.I'm a servant leader, so I show up on a team as whatever the team needs. That instinct comes from genuinely caring that the team succeeds as a whole, not just my corner of it. And I'm able to fill those gaps because of being a skilled generalist.A team at its best, to me, is one that arrives somewhere none of its members could have reached alone. That's the version of teamwork with an outcome that is only possible because of the specific combination of people in the room, each one making the others better.

A team and it's function

I get asked a lot, “Why are you still in help desk roles? You’re qualified for more than that.”And here is my 2¢ about that question:I don’t really see the help desk role as a low level position. Yes, help desk can have tiers unlike other departments, but a sophisticated help desk needs senior roles to train entry level employees and to handle difficult problems. A help desk “specialist” is really a technical support generalist that is proficient in every department and sees the big picture, but not necessarily a subject matter expert for those other departments. Our specialty is being a generalist. We aren’t engineers or architects, positions that plan and implement a department from scratch. We are hybrids: system administrators, customer support providers, and trainers all in one. If your company sees the help desk low on the totem pole then you are missing out on a huge opportunity of having a competent, powerhouse of a technical department driving customer satisfaction to new heights. Internal and external facing help desks need to be no longer regarded for entry level employees only.Furthermore, there are so many ways to work with “computers” and “tech”. Every one of them gets asked by a family member if they can fix their computer, install a new smart home device, setup their Internet. Their response, “that’s not what I do.” Guess what, that’s what I do—that’s what a help desk specialist can do and so much more. Help Desk is a skill we can take home with us. It’s useful outside of work.So why do I like working in a help desk roles? Because I like technology, I like interacting with people and helping them, and I like empowering entry level employees early in their career. I want to make technology more accessible to you no matter if you’re a customer, a contractor, or a coworker.
